You do have to assemble this unit, and it was almost beyond me! The instructions were clear, but for some that's only done a little assembly, I found the weight that goes under the base almost beyond my ability to hold it. The hard part came when I tried to get the center pole into the screw at the base without the weight falling off. Took me several tries. Someone used to assembly wouldn't have had to try several different attempts before finding the one that works. Any assembly required cost the unit a star.This newer model has a mouse ear screw instead of needing a screwdriver to tighten the lamp head. It also has a toggle switch instead of a push button switch like the older model. It also has five castor base instead of four. Must have had the older model for 20 years, and I hope to bring this one into the retirement home in a few decades. 5/6/17 - Quit after less than 3 years.
