DESCRIPTION
Ice Cream is a global survey of recent developments in contemporary art with an emphasis on emerging artists. In 1998, Phaidon published cream , which initiated its 10x10 Phaidon asked ten curators to each select ten emerging artists. Among the 100 figures chosen many are now established artists, including Maurizio Cattelan, Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson, and Thomas Hirschhorn. Ice Cream reveals the next generaton of emerging artists as selected by a fresh grouo of Sergio Edelsztein, Jens Hoffmann, Lisette Lagnado, Midori Matsui, Shamim Momin, Pi Li, Gloria Sutton, Olesya Turkina, Philippe Vergne, and The Wrong Gallery. Each of the ten selected curators is known for his or her integrity and expertise in staging presentations of new art on an international level. The hundred artists featured are important figures of contemporary art who have either emerged internationally over roughly the past five years or are still relatively unknown. No limitations as to age, geography, or media are imposed; to "have emerged" means to have had a few solo shows, but nothing major; to have perhaps been reviewed in major international art press, but no major monograph; to have been given sufficient exposure without yet becoming fully established. Each curator also selects a "source artist", namely any artist from any previous generation whom they feel remains of key significance either to contemporary art at large or to his or her own thinking. Each artist's work is represented by a generous selection of color images, an introductory text by the curator who selected the artist, and an exhibition history and bibliography. Ice Cream isan essential purchase for anyone interested in the art world, a must-have document for art world insiders, and a crash course for beginners. It is and will be an authoritative reference book for years to come.

The book itself is a very good reference and coffee table book by Phaidon. It is hardcover with an attractive flashy binding and good text size. The only drawback to this volume is the curators' choices of works that are a mixed bag of recent works, as well as some works as early as the 1970s, which subtracts from the futuristic theme.
